What Is Loneliness?

Loneliness is about feeling separate from others. It might include a feeling of being abandoned or ignored, or a sense of being alone in the world. Throughout life, we naturally separate from others - from our parents as we become teenagers, perhaps from school friends when we start work or go to college and from different partners throughout our lives.

If you are feeling lonely or isolated you are not alone. Many of our texters feel like they have no one to talk to for different reasons.

Overcoming Loneliness

Finding ways to overcome loneliness can include things you do yourself, and finding things to do with other people.

Try something new

Trying something new on your own can help you discover things you can do by yourself. You can start off small by listening to a podcast or audiobook, doing an online workout or art class. This can help build up your confidence and help you feel more comfortable spending time alone. Signing up for an online course, book club or exercise class can help you feel more connected to others and reduce that feeling of being alone.

Reach out to friends and family

Sometimes those closest to us may not realise we are feeling lonely. Reaching out to them with a text or phone call can help us realise that even when we feel alone there are people out there who love and care about us. If you would rather talk to someone anonymously you can always chat to our text service volunteers by texting ‘HELLO’ to 50808.

Talk to someone

If there is something specific happening in your life, which makes you feel lonely, don’t be afraid to seek out help and support for it. Talk to someone you trust about how you feel – sharing your feelings and worries with others can help lessen the loneliness or feeling of isolation you are going through.
