  WHATSAPP FAQs

CAN TEXT ABOUT IT SEE MY NAME AND NUMBER ON WHATSAPP?

We cannot see your name, number, or other profile information on WhatsApp. When you message us on WhatsApp, our system uses your phone number to connect you to a trained volunteer. Volunteers cannot see your phone number or your name. They will only know information you tell them directly.   Text About Supervisors are paid, professional members of staff who oversee the work of our volunteers. Supervisors can access all previous messages you sent to us from your number, but they cannot see your number itself except for in the case of an emergency.

CAN YOU SEE MY WHATSAPP PROFILE PHOTO?

Our volunteers and Supervisors cannot see your WhatsApp profile photo.

WHAT IS END-TO-END ENCRYPTION?

WhatsApp offers “end-to-end encryption”. This means that your messages are encrypted, or turned into a special code, which protects them from being read by anyone except for you and the person you are messaging. This is done automatically with every message you send.

If you want to find out more about the way WhatsApp uses end-to-end encryption, you can read their explaination here.

CAN WHATSAPP READ OUR CONVERSATIONS?

WhatsApp is a messaging service owned by Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram. If you choose to communicate with us through WhatsApp, we rely on their service to let us talk to you.  Messages exchanged with us on Whatsapp are ‘end-to-end encrypted’, meaning nobody but you and our volunteers/staff can read what you share with us. However, if you report a message as abuse or spam, it will be forwarded to WhatsApp for moderation and they will be able to read it. If you want to find out more about the way that WhatsApp uses your data, you can see their terms here .
