What is sadness?

Having days where we feel sad or down is something many people experience throughout their lives. Sadness, or low mood as it is sometimes known, is different from depression. It tends to last for a shorter time (less than two weeks) and we may not experience all of the signs associated with depression.

Coping with feeling down

WRITE IT OUT

Writing down or drawing your thoughts and feelings can sometimes help you to get a clearer picture of what’s causing you to feel a certain way. Having your feelings written down can also help you to explain to others how you are feeling, especially if you struggle to express what you are going through when speaking to a loved one, getting support from your GP or a counselling service.

Make time for yourself

Feeling down can sometimes be a sign that you need to take some time out. Doing something that we usually enjoy or find relaxing can help us take the break we need. It can also be a good way of checking in with yourself and realising why you might be feeling sad.

Talk to someone

Talking to someone about feeling sad can be helpful. It can help remind you that you are not alone and they can help if you need support from a GP or counselling service.

You may feel as though you don’t want to talk to someone you know or in person right now, and that’s okay. If you would like free, anonymous support, you can text HELLO to 50808 to speak to a volunteer. We are open 24 hours a day.
